The McCarthy Record
Gronstal's Partner in the Legislature

Areas where McCarthy says one thing and does the opposite.

Marriage Amendment

After Claiming to believe Marriage should be only between one man and one woman He forced his fellow Democrats to kill an amendment to the State Constitution to define it that way.  He doesn’t want Iowan’s to have a vote on the issue.

In anticipation of a Iowa Supreme Court decision allowing gay marriage McCarthy even voted to allow out of state same sex couples to come to Iowa to get married, even if their own states don’t allow it.  Looks like the self described out of state gay activists who have given them half a million dollars got their moneys worth!!

Illegal Immigration

He promised to do something about Illegal Immigration but he voted to kill laws to require employers to check the immigration status of employees, to keep illegal aliens from getting Iowa Drivers Licenses, to hold illegals without bail if they are arrested and to call the Feds, to make it serious crime to falsify documents, to train state law enforcement officers to work with Immigration officials and to make it illegal to fire US Citizens in order to hire illegals.  Then, with only days to go in the legislative session, he rolled all those issues into a single bill and cynically passed it out of the Iowa House KNOWING it would never be brought up in the State Senate.

GUNS

He promised he would support changing Iowa’s laws concerning concealed weapons to require County Sheriffs to issue Carry Permits fairly and equitably to law abiding citizens.  BUT, He Led the Effort to kill the law change.

He also broke his promise to support the Castle Doctrine that would have ended the requirement to run and leave our homes to armed intruders.

Sunshine Law and Campaigns

He claims he wants a strong Sunshine Law requiring transparency in government.  BUT, as Majority Leader he kept the bill from ever coming to a vote.

He says he wants to make it illegal for lobbyists to contribute to campaigns BUT he says nothing about the Special Interest PACs who pay those lobbyists.  All Smoke, No Substance.

He even voted AGAINST requiring 527 groups, like those run by George Soros, to disclose the sources of their money when they contribute to Iowa PACs and parties.  That way Soros can give money to his party and to PACs without disclosing who actually contributed the money and it can then passed on to his candidates with the public never knowing who is really funding his candidates.

Things he did that he never said he would do.  Whose interests are being protected here?

 Tobacco

He is the Father of the Smoking Ban & the Tobacco Tax. That tax takes $500 a year out of the budgets of working families in which one person smokes a pack a day.  He has also spent the money received on everything except smoking and health programs as he promised.  He exempted Casinos from the ban so he could continue raking in revenue, but enforces it on small businesses and family farm corporations.

Spending

Under McCarthy & Gronstal they increased spending more in two years than in the previous eight.  He even voted against restricting spending to 99% of revenues and voted to raid trust funds in order to spend the money.  He also raised sales taxes, tobacco taxes and dozens of fees.

SILO/LOST

He took away our right to vote on the Local Option Sales Tax for school infrastructure and made it a permanent State Sales and Use Tax and even voted NOT to require the money to go to schools.  It will now go to the general fund and can be spent on anything.

Promoted the Union Bosses Agenda

He tried a sneak attack on local officials and taxpayers by sneaking in the AFSCME/ Teachers Union wish list in the dark of night with no notice to the public and minimum debate.  He voted against every attempt to require accountability and protect taxpayers.  Even Governor Culver couldn’t stomach this naked attempt to force the Union Bosses Agenda on Iowans.  He also tried to gut Iowa’s Right to Work Law and force Iowan’s to join unions.

Eminent Domain

He steadfastly stood against the rights of property owners in the face of government and developers wanting to take their land to build lake resorts.

Protecting Kids

He voted against requiring background checks for childcare workers or requiring the notification of school authorities if a teacher is arrested.

Private Schools

With the Public Schools in his district having dropout rates around 40% he voted to put State Education Bureaucrats in charge of the Curriculum in Private Schools.

 Identity Theft

McCarthy voted against punishing Public Employees who sell citizens private information and he also voted against requiring the State Government to notify individuals when it has learned that someone else is using their Social Security Numbers.

So What’s Next on McCarthy’s Agenda That He’s Not Telling Us?

Eliminating Iowa’s Right to Work Law?  He already tried it last year.

Giving Unions Control of State and Local Budgets?  He already tried it this year.

Banning Grocery Store Bags?  New Greenie Priority.

Expanding the bottle bill and increasing fees? Governor's Priority

Expand the Smoking Ban?    McCarthy already said he wants to do it.

Attacks on Home Schooling?  Teachers Union Priority

Further Tax and Fee Increases?  To fund the ever increasing budget.

Most of what McCarthy did over the last two years he never talked about in the last campaign, and what he did promise he went back on.  Why should we expect it to be different now?
