Disney to challenge McCarthy for
Iowa House |

March 31, 2008 - Des Moines, Iowa -
Retired Navy Commander, and former State Legislator, Larry Disney announced today that he is set to challenge Rep. Kevin McCarthy for the Iowa House of Representatives. Disney, 54, will run for the House District 67 seat on a message of fiscal discipline and more accountability in state government. "For instance", Disney says, “Kevin McCarthy chose not bring up an amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman for debate in the House.” “Kevin is out of touch with the voters in this district,” said Disney. “We, the people, should be allowed a vote on the definition of marriage, and he instead is leaving it in the hands of the courts. A handful of unelected judges should not be able to subvert the will of the people.” Disney also called the recent bottle bill proposal a “tax increase disguised as a bottle bill.” "Expanding the bottle deposit bill will hit working folks the hardest,” said Disney. “I would never support the expansion of what amounts to a regressive tax.” Disney says the legislature should focus on limiting government rather than expanding it. “State spending has increased by a whopping 20 percent in just two years,” he continued. “I highly doubt the taxpayers in District 67 have seen their paychecks rise by that much. I can guarantee there is a tax increase on the horizon to pay for their out of control spending.” Disney, who served in the Iowa House in 1995-96, developed a bill that was the last property tax cut passed by the Iowa legislature. In 1996, it passed through the House, but waited another year before both houses passed, and the governor signed, the bill. He says lower property taxes will continue to be his priority. “Legislators continually talk about lowering property taxes, but I've actually done it,” said Disney. “I would like the opportunity to do so again.”
Disney is a graduate of Southeast Polk High School.
He received his undergrad at Iowa State University, and while on active
duty earned his MBA from Southern Illinois University. He served in the
Navy for 23 years.
He and his wife, Debra, reside in Pleasant Hill.
